The town of Łęczna has received over PLN 11 million in funding for the restoration of the Synagogue Complex. The building will be transformed into a museum and educational center in cooperation with the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland (FODŻ).
Funding from the Marshal's Office
The municipality of Łęczna received over PLN 11,370,000 in funding from the Marshal's Office of the Lubelskie Province for the third stage of the Old Town's revitalization. The funds will be allocated to the renovation and adaptation of the Small and Large Synagogues. The municipality of Łęczna received the highest score in the selection process and the largest grant among the submitted projects.
New functions of the synagogue complex
The aim of the project is to adapt the synagogue buildings for use as a museum and educational center. The planned activities include conservation, renovation, adaptation, and the purchase of equipment.
The modernized buildings will serve as a library, reading room, exhibition space, and venue for cultural events. A museum dedicated to the history of the Jewish community in Łęczna will be established in the synagogue.
Cooperation with FODŻ
The synagogue is owned by the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage, which has leased it to the town of Łęczna for 60 years. According to the Foundation, the plan is to create a Center for Intercultural Dialogue in the synagogue, which will serve as an educational and cultural center.
The synagogue in Łęczna was built in 1655. After World War II, the building housed the Regional Museum. Since 2014, the building has remained unused, which has led to its progressive deterioration.
The so-called Small Synagogue is a 19th-century building. Since October 1993, it has housed the Municipal Public Library.
