On Sunday, July 20 at 12:00 pm, the Treblinka Museum will host another thematic educational walk through the former German Nazi extermination and labor camp. This time, the participants will learn about the topic of transports to the camp, in connection with the 83rd anniversary of the first transport of Jews to Treblinka, which falls on July 23.

Encounters with tragic history

The event will be led by Anna Remiszewska, assistant professor at the Treblinka Museum's Education Department. As she says in an interview with Heschel Center News, the Treblinka Memorial walks have been organized since January, periodically - once a month and their themes are related to anniversaries and the history of the site.

"During the July walk, we will introduce the subject of transports to the camp based on witness accounts. We will also tell the historical story of the Treblinka camps. The testimonies of prisoners who survived will not be missing," she announces.

The walk will begin at the parking lot next to the Museum's information desk. It will last about three hours, and the cost of participation is PLN 7. The event is being held as part of the educational project “Thematic Walks at the Treblinka Memorial.” “The project is aimed at expanding knowledge of the history of the Treblinka camps and the fate of the victims,” explains Remiszewska.

Unique encounters

As she notes, the walks also have an unexpected, moving dimension: "Since March, our walks have been attended somewhat spontaneously, or perhaps intentionally, by people directly related to the history of the labor camp - often relatives, and loved ones. Seeing information on our Facebook about such a walk, they simply come. These are people with family history related to imprisonment at the Treblinka labor camp that we didn’t know about," says Anna Remiszewska. As she adds, one of the walks featured the daughter of a labor camp prisoner. “She came to see the remains of the camp and there just happened to be a walk, so it brought us together - the workers and families of former camp prisoners,” the Treblinka Museum representative recalls.

As a result, the walks become a place for unique meetings and the exchange of testimonies. “During the walks we tell individual stories and then the participants of the walks share their stories, their family experiences,” Anna Remiszewska emphasizes.

Anniversary of the Treblinka prisoners' revolt

The 82nd anniversary of the revolt of the prisoners of the German extermination camp in Treblinka will also be celebrated soon, on August 4. A commemorative exhibition devoted specifically to the uprising of the prisoners and the history of the extermination camp is also planned for August. In September, meanwhile, an exhibition on patriotic and religious ceremonies based on the history of the labor camp is planned, with special emphasis this year on the Gravel Pit and the Black Road.
